On February 20, 2012, around 8:20 PM our 911 Center began receiving numerous calls of gunshots on Sayers Drive in Marrero. Within minutes additional calls started coming in reporting several victims shot on Sayers Drive near Constantine Drive.
First responding officers located multiple victims at various addresses on Sayers Drive. All were black males, ranging in ages from 13 to19. The 13 year-old from Marrero was shot multiple times. He was transported to University Hospital where his injuries, according to attending physicians did not appear to be life-threatening. The remaining victims were identified as Akili Dailey, 17, Iren Paul, 18 of Marrero, Davanti Butler, 19 of Marrero, a16 year-old from Marrero and a 16 year-old from Harvey. Their injuries were also all considered not life-threatening.
Homicide Detective Matt Vasquez learned all of the victims reported they were standing near the corner of Sayers Drive and Constantine Drive waiting for a ride, when without any provocation, shots rang out causing each of them to take off running on Sayers Drive. The shooters continued in pursuit while firing at the victims. Neither of the victims reported seeing a vehicle, nor could they identifiy their assailants. A witness reported seeing a blck vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed.
Crimes Scene Technicians collected a substantial amount of spent AK-47 shell casings, along with a number of spent .45 Cal and .9MM shell casings as well.
We have no known suspects at this time, now have we established a motive at this time.
